When you call Mangrum Agency, you reach the same people who set up your policy, who will be there at your renewal, and who will pick up if a coverage question comes up in between. As a family-owned independent insurance agency in Mesquite, TX, we've built this business on referrals, straight answers, and 35 years of showing up for clients the same way we'd want someone to show up for us.

Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage can both help address the costs and coverage needs that come with Original Medicare Parts A and B, but they work very differently. The right choice depends on your doctors, medications, health needs, travel habits, and whether you prefer predictable monthly costs or lower premiums with pay-as-you-go copays.
For seniors in Dallas, Fort Worth, McKinney, Denton, Mesquite, and throughout the DFW area, comparing these paths carefully is one of the most important Medicare decisions you can make. Mangrum Agency in Mesquite, TX provides patient, practical guidance so you can understand the trade-offs before choosing a plan.
Start With Original Medicare
Original Medicare
includes Part A and Part B. Part A generally helps cover inpatient hospital care, while Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, lab work, medical equipment, and other medically necessary services.
Original Medicare gives you broad provider access. In most cases, you can see any doctor or hospital in the United States that accepts Medicare. For many people who travel often, spend time in different states, or have preferred specialists, that flexibility is a major advantage.
However, Original Medicare does not pay every cost. After you meet the Part B deductible, you generally pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for covered Part B services. There is no yearly out-of-pocket maximum for that 20% under Original Medicare alone. A major outpatient procedure, specialist care, or extended treatment can create significant costs.
That is where Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage enter the conversation. They take different approaches to helping you manage the gaps in Original Medicare.
How Medicare Supplement Plans Work
A Medicare Supplement
plan, often called Medigap, works alongside Original Medicare. You keep Parts A and B, and the supplement helps pay certain out-of-pocket expenses left behind by Original Medicare, such as deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.
Medigap benefits are standardized by letter in most states, including Texas. That means a Plan G sold by one insurance company has the same core Medicare benefits as a Plan G sold by another company. The premiums, underwriting rules, customer service, discounts, and rate history may differ from carrier to carrier.
With a Medicare Supplement plan, you can generally see any provider nationwide that accepts Medicare. There are no Medicare Advantage-style provider networks to navigate, and referrals are generally not required for specialist care. You also buy a separate Part D prescription drug plan if you want outpatient drug coverage.
This approach often appeals to people who value provider freedom and want fewer unexpected costs when they receive covered care. The trade-off is that you pay a monthly premium for the Medicare Supplement policy, in addition to your Part B premium and, typically, a separate Part D premium.
Plan G and Plan N: Common Medigap Choices
For people new to Medicare in Texas, Plan G and Plan N are two of the most common Medicare Supplement options. Both can help with many of the costs Original Medicare does not pay, but they have different cost-sharing structures.
Plan G
is often chosen by people who want broad, predictable coverage after they pay the annual Part B deductible. It covers many of the remaining Medicare-approved out-of-pocket costs, including the typical 20% Part B coinsurance.
Plan N
often has a lower monthly premium than Plan G, but it may involve copays for certain office or emergency room visits and does not cover Part B excess charges. It can be a good fit for someone comfortable taking on some costs in exchange for a lower premium.
Neither plan includes outpatient prescription drug coverage, so you would generally pair either one with a stand-alone Part D plan. Mangrum Agency can help you compare Plan G, Plan N, and available Medicare
drug coverage based on your actual prescriptions and budget.
How Medicare Advantage Works
Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits through a private insurance company approved by Medicare. Instead of using Original Medicare as your primary coverage with a separate supplement, you receive your Part A and Part B benefits through the Medicare Advantage plan.
Most Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage, so you usually do not need a separate drug plan. Many plans also include extra benefits that Original Medicare does not typically cover, such as dental, vision, hearing, fitness programs, transportation, or over-the-counter allowances.
Medicare Advantage plans commonly use provider networks. Depending on the plan, you may need to use doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and specialists in the plan’s network except for emergencies. Some plans require referrals for certain specialist care, while others do not. Copays and coinsurance can apply as you use services.
One important feature is the annual out-of-pocket maximum for covered Medicare services. Once you reach that plan limit, the plan pays the full cost of covered services for the rest of the calendar year. Keep in mind that the plan’s monthly premium, network, copays, drug formulary, and maximum out-of-pocket amount may change from year to year.
Questions That Help You Choose
There is no single answer to which Medicare plan is best for Texas seniors. The better question is which coverage approach fits your
life. These questions can help narrow the decision:
Do I travel frequently?
If you regularly travel outside Texas, visit family in other states, or split time between homes, the nationwide access available with Original Medicare and a Medicare Supplement may be important to you.
Do I have specialists I want to keep?
Check whether your preferred doctors, hospitals, and specialists participate in a Medicare Advantage plan’s network. This is especially important if you receive ongoing care in Dallas, Fort Worth, McKinney, Denton, or Mesquite.
Do I prefer predictable monthly costs or lower premiums with potential copays?
Medicare Supplement plans often involve a higher monthly premium but can reduce many out-of-pocket costs for covered services. Medicare Advantage plans may have lower monthly premiums, but you may pay copays or coinsurance when you use care.
What prescriptions do I take?
Whether you choose a stand-alone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage, review each medication, dosage, and preferred pharmacy. Formularies and drug costs differ by plan.
Can I Switch From Medicare Advantage to a Medicare Supplement?
You can use the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, which runs from October 15 through December 7, to leave Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare for the following year. You can then apply for a Medicare Supplement policy and enroll in a separate Part D plan if needed.
However, qualifying for a Medicare Supplement plan is a separate step. Outside of your initial Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a qualifying guaranteed-issue situation, an insurer may ask health questions and use underwriting. Approval is not automatic simply because you can leave Medicare Advantage during AEP. Do not cancel your existing coverage until you understand the new policy’s eligibility, effective date, and cost.
Are Medicare Supplement Premiums the Same From Every Insurance Company in Texas?
No. The benefits for the same standardized letter plan are the same, but the premiums can vary by insurance company. Rates may also reflect factors such as your age, location, household discount eligibility, and the carrier’s pricing method. That is why comparing more than one carrier can be worthwhile.
Mangrum Agency helps clients look beyond the first premium they see. We explain the plan benefits, carrier options, prescription coverage, provider access, and long-term budget considerations so you can make a well-informed choice.
